Queensgate Medical Centre is excited to announce that state-funded Meningococcal ACWY vaccines will now be provided for patients who are between 12 months to less than 5 years of age at our clinic. Children aged from 12 months to less than 2 years will receive one dose of Nimenrix. Children aged from 2 years to less than 5 years old will receive one dose of Menveo.
Unfortunately the number of meningococcal infections in WA is rising. Children under 5 years of age are at highest risk of invasive meningococcal disease. In response to this emerging threat, WA Health is commencing this vaccination program for children as soon as they turn 12 months of age until under 5 years old. Children who are under the age of 12 months or 5 years and older can receive the vaccine by a script from your doctor and collect through your local pharmacy.
Studies have shown the effectiveness of the Meningococcal ACWY vaccine is between 80 to 85 percent. As any vaccine there may be some mild side effects. These include redness and swelling, rash, headache, nausea, loss of appetite and fever. These are usually mild and go away on their own within a few days, around half the people who receive the Meningococcal ACWY vaccine will have mild problems following the vaccination. These side effects are similar to many other vaccines and aren't considered serious, but if you or your child/children do experience these side effects it's best to contact our surgery.
